Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend

A new decade birthday deserves special attention. My friend Mary happens to love diamonds, so this was an easy theme.  When Audrey Hepburn had breakfast at Tiffany, she wore a diamond tiara and the photos of her are framed in the San Francisco Union Square store.  For the invitation and the menu card, I went in-store and took a photo of her but added a modern twist:  I painted in the lips red because the birthday girl always wears red lipstick. I also found Audrey place cards to tie in the theme.  It was December so the colors were magical. Coupled with the robin’s egg Tiffany color, I was holiday ready.

Many years ago with some of my  aunts in Turlock, CA we popped into a T.J. Maxx store and found robin’s egg blue scalloped plates. I could not believe my luck. It was love at first sight, so I bought them on the spot. Now I had the matching China, but what was I going to do for the party favor? I went back to Tiffany and purchased a jar of jewelry cleaner for each guest which came in their signature blue bag. I lined them up under our white Christmas tree for high impact with Tiffany themed wine bags which we used for hostess gifts over that Christmas.

Little Black Dress

In the movie, Audrey Hepburn wore a little black dress with pearls and sunglasses, so I asked each guest to wear a little black dress and pearls. In addition to the jewelry cleaner, I went to the Dollar Tree and purchased black sunglasses for the table favor as well as Audrey nail polish, and created personalized matches that said “seventy something.”  Mary’s favorite foods are, mushroom bisque, chicken pot pies, and carrot cake. This luncheon was better than Christmas morning.
