Money Matters: How to Talk Money at Work | Golden Rules Gal™

Money talk in the workplace can be tricky territory. While transparency around pay can sometimes lead to positive outcomes like pay equity and fairness, more often it leads to discomfort, jealousy, or unnecessary tension among colleagues. Understanding when, how, and if you should discuss salary at work requires careful navigation. Here’s how to gracefully handle the often-taboo subject of money talk in professional settings.

Why Money Talk is Impolite.

The subject of money is impolite and with good reason. There will always be someone who makes more or less than you, which can easily open up a can of worms. A good rule of thumb is this: if it doesn’t affect you directly, stay in your own lane. Your salary is between you, your boss, and your family.

When Salary Discussions are Acceptable.

At the office, talking about one’s salary is not common practice but largely depends on the circumstance. Say you work for a large grocery store chain. In this case, most everyone will know the pay structure. If you’re in sales, chances are you will be compensated based on your performance, and everyone’s performance will be different.

Salary Talk as a Taboo Topic.

Like politics, religion, and vaccinations, money is a taboo topic. We live in a “quick-to-share” generation, but your salary only affects you and is very personal. It’s the equivalent of asking somebody how old they are or how much they paid for their car or their home. It’s simply not done.

How to Handle Uncomfortable Money Conversations.

It’s natural to be curious, but for many people, the discussion of money is “cringe-worthy” because it crosses social boundaries. You don’t owe anyone an explanation, especially when they’re interested in your personal affairs, which is prying and being nosy!
