Ever been at a loss for words? Join the crowd. These 9 tips can help you confidently kick off conversations, keep them flowing, and make social interactions more enjoyable, even if you’re not a natural chatterbox.
1. Break the Ice.
Start with light, open-ended questions to spark dialogue.
2. Stay Informed.
Read a daily newspaper (don’t forget the sports section) for current events that fuel conversation.
3. Name-Drop (Gently).
Repeat your conversation partner’s name a few times to show focus and attention.
4. Boost Your Confidence.
Practice in front of a mirror—smile, maintain good eye contact. Channel your inner Cary Grant.
5. Ask About Them.
People love talking about themselves, so ask about their interests and experiences.
6. Prepare for Pauses.
Have a couple of safe topics ready (e.g., current events, new restaurants, movies, hobbies) to fill any conversational gaps.
7. Avoid Sensitive Subjects.
Steer clear of topics like personal family issues, health problems, off-color jokes, or politics and religion.
8. Know When to Exit.
Keep it brief and have an exit strategy. Follow the 3B’s: begin, be brief, be gone.
9. Try the Alphabet Game.
Try Eleanor Roosevelt’s trick: run through topics alphabetically until something sparks interest (A = airline travel, B = hottest book, C = Notre Dame cathedral re opener, etc.). It’s as easy as ABC.
