Don’t be the guest who never gets invited back or becomes notorious for poor manners. Follow these 9 essential etiquette tips to be a welcomed and cherished guest:

  1. RSVP Alone But Bring a +1

If you RSVP’d just for yourself, showing up with an uninvited guest puts your host in an awkward spot.

  2. Send a List of Dietary Restrictions

It’s a private dinner party, not a restaurant. Unless your allergies are severe, gracefully eat around items you cannot consume.

  3. Be Overly Food-Centric

If you’re vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc., it’s courteous to decline politely or offer to bring a dish you can enjoy without fuss.

  4. Arrive Late (or Too Early)

Arriving 15 minutes after the stated time is ideal. Early arrivals can disrupt preparations, and late arrivals inconvenience the entire party.

  5. Be Demanding About Drinks

Don’t make special drink requests like, “I only drink dry champagne or Burgundian wine.” Be gracious and accept what’s offered.

  6. Arrive Without a Hostess Gift

Even if the host insists “just bring yourselves,” always bring a small token of appreciation. It’s basic courtesy.

  7. Overstay Your Welcome

Know when the party is winding down and leave gracefully. Pay attention to social cues.

  8. Skip the Thank You

Failing to call or send a thank-you note the next day is impolite. Just do it!

  9. Leave a Mess in the Powder Room

Keep the bathroom tidy for other guests. Inform your host if essentials like toilet paper need restocking.
