Even if you can’t attend an event, be the kind of guest friends and family will continue to invite. Expressing gratitude for the invitation with a polite response guarantees you’ll stay connected. Remember, social graces are the glue that binds us together.
Here’s What NOT to Say:
- “We’d love to come, but we were invited to a black-tie event the same night. Hope you understand.” (Rude)
- “Thanks, but since you’re serving beef and I’m vegan, we couldn’t possibly attend.” (Less is more)
- “Your dinner is on the same night as the Academy Awards. We’re hosting a party that night.” (Not appropriate if the host wasn’t invited)
Here’s What TO Say:
- “I’m so sad to miss your party. It’s my father’s 90th, and we’re taking him on an adventure. Let’s chat after both events.”
- “Thank you for the invite. My husband is traveling that week, so we won’t be able to attend.”
- “Of all the dates! It’s my sister’s birthday, and we have family dinner plans. Sorry to miss.”
- “You throw the best parties, but we have houseguests that weekend. Thanks so much.”
- “Say it ain’t so! That’s the night of my etiquette Zoom class. Can’t wait to hear the details. Thanks for thinking of me.”
- “I just recovered from COVID and don’t want to risk getting anyone sick. Thanks again for thinking of me.”
- “Thank you for the invitation, but I regret that I’ll be unable to attend.”
- “I have a new client in town that evening, so I can’t attend. Looking forward to catching up soon.”
- “Thank you for thinking of us. Another friend gave us playoff tickets to a baseball game; my husband would be crushed if we couldn’t go.”
- “You’re the Auntie Mame of party givers, so it makes me sad we can’t attend. I can’t wait to hear all about it. Thank you!”
