      1. Please Provide An Example Of A “Helpful” Thing That Holiday Party Guests Do That Hosts Don’t In Fact Find Helpful.

Who doesn’t love a helpful guest until they aren’t. Often guests wish to ‘follow the leader’ which might appear helpful, but you’ve already arranged the table, place cards, and flowers the way you want it for your guests. From a guest’s point of view, it was about aiding with good intention.

        1. Which Clues Should A Guest Be Looking For, That Might Indicate That Their Host Doesn’t Want Help In The Kitchen/Clearing The Table/Etc.?

You asked to help, and your host has declined; you’re in a small space whereby only your host can fit in the kitchen; her non-verbal cues tell you yay or nay.

          1. How Can Party Guests *Actually* Help Their Hosts?

The word ‘host’ can be a double entendre, and being a good guest begins long before the party begins.  It means a timely rsvp, showing up on time, not bringing a plus one when only you were invited, or insist on drinking the wine you brought as a hostess gift, etc.

            1. How Can Hosts Set A Clear Tone For Their Guests About The Help That They Need (Or Don’t Need)?
It’s up to the host to set the tone for the evening. While help can come in many different forms, it’s how they communicate to the guest(s) that is key.  If you know the host, you will know her style and any marching orders. If it’s a first time invite, I employ a script before I enter a party: “Your home is lovely.  Is there anything I can do to help you this evening?”  At that point you will have your answer either by non-verbal communication or a simple, “Thank you, but I’m all set.”  Enjoy the evening!
