I love my mobile phone, but I also cherish silence. There are numerous places where talking on your phone is simply inappropriate. Here are 8 silence sanctuaries:
-
The Car.
You’ve been warned countless times—talking on the phone while driving is dangerous, even hands-free. If the conversation can’t wait, pull over to a safe location.
-
Performances.
Movies, theater, concerts—these are no-phone zones. If there’s an emergency, quietly step out to the lobby to avoid disturbing others.
-
Check-Out Lines.
Don’t be the person holding up the line while distracted by a call. Give the checker your full attention so others can be served efficiently. Save the conversation for the parking lot.
-
Airport Security.
The FAA prohibits phone use during passport checks. Attempting to use your phone could result in delays or other issues.
-
Hospitals.
Waiting rooms might allow quiet calls, but patient rooms and intensive care units require peace. Take your conversations to the lobby or outside.
-
Places of Worship
. Using a phone in these sacred spaces is disruptive and disrespectful. Show reverence by silencing your device or turning it off completely.
-
Libraries.
Libraries are sanctuaries of quiet and learning. Embrace the silence—think books, not phone calls.
-
Public Restrooms.
It should go without saying—this is unhygienic and uncomfortable for everyone involved.
